• The Nantahala Hiking Club will take an easy-to-moderate 3-mile hike from Albert Mt. to Betty Creek. Meet at
Westgate Plaza in Franklin (opposite Burger King) at 8:00 a.m. Drive 35 miles round trip. Bring water, lunch, a hiking
stick, and wear sturdy, comfortable shoes. Hikes are limited to 20. Call leader George Gover, 349-1509, for

• East Coast Girls Volleyball showecase for 9th-12th grade girls at the Greensboro Sportsplex from noon-4 p.m. The
Lucky Dog Volleyball Showcase provides high school players the opportunity to exhibit their skills in front of college
coaches. This showcase may connect players with coaches who otherwise would not have the chance to see them

• Macon County Schools first meeting of the Western Mountains Reading Council is at the Franklin High School
Media Center from 4:30-6 p.m.. The program will be on I-Search. Email reservations for the catered meal to carol.

• The Art League of Highlands monthly meeting, at 6 p.m. at the Highlands Recreation Park. James Smythe will
present a program “Winslow Homer.” Considered one of the greatest 19th century American artists, he is a dominant
influence on the American realistic painting. James Smythe is an award winning painter and has his Master of Art
degree from Columbia University and taught art at Western Carolina University for 31 years. Refreshments will be
served around 5 p.m. The membership meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the program. Guests are welcome.
