the Sights of Highlands
Founded in 1875 by Samuel Kelsey and Clinton Hutchinson, The Highlands Plateau, located in the southern Blue
Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, is a wonderful place to spend some quiet peaceful days, away from the
traffic, phone calls, and hustle and bustle of city life. The town got its name from the elevation of the town; those
people living north and south of this area would go to the “high lands” to escape the heat of the summers in which they
lived.  The name Highlands stuck.
Located just 125 miles north from the suburbs of Atlanta, and only 85 miles west from Greenville, South Carolina, and
65 miles south of Asheville, North Carolina, Highlands is ideally situated for the weekend getaway, second home
investment, or business retreat.

The town itself sits atop the plateau, at an average altitude of 4,118 feet above sea level. The Benchmark on Main
Street measures the altitude there at 3835 feet, while just a few blocks away, Satulah Mountain crests at 4,543 feet.
The altitude produces a climate of mild temperate, reduced the heat and low humidity; the ample rainfall provide lush
gardens and natural vegetation.
